What is a microgrid?
A microgrid is a localized energy system that can operate independently or in conjunction with the main power grid. It integrates various energy sources, such as solar, wind, batteries, and conventional generators, to provide reliable, resilient, and sustainable electricity to a specific area or community. Microgrids are designed to enhance energy security by offering control over local energy resources and ensuring continuous power supply even during grid outages.
How do microgrids work?
Microgrids function by connecting a combination of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and sometimes backup generators, with advanced control systems that allow the system to operate autonomously or be managed remotely. These systems continuously monitor energy demand, generation, and storage, enabling the grid to balance and optimize power distribution in real-time. When connected to the main grid, microgrids can also supply excess energy to the grid, contributing to grid stability and efficiency. In the event of a power outage, a microgrid can "island" itself, providing uninterrupted power to critical loads.
